Our History
since 1904
At St. Patrick Cemetery, we have a rich heritage rooted in the historic pioneer community of Midnapore, Calgary. Built in 1904, St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church, the oldest surviving Catholic church in Calgary, holds a significant place in the city’s religious development. Declared a Provincial Historic Resource by the Government of Alberta in 2001, it stands as a testament to the dedication and resilience of its builders.
Resting Place of Calgary’s Historical Figures
St. Patrick Cemetery is the final resting place of notable individuals who have played an influential role in shaping Calgary’s history. One such figure is James McKevitt, born in 1862 at Carrickmacross, County Monaghan, Ireland, and passed away in 1930 in Midnapore, Alberta. James, together with his wife Julia Agatha Kiely, established their roots in Calgary. Their farm, affectionately named ‘Shamrock Hill,’ became a symbol of their enduring spirit and contributions to the community. The McKevitts left a lasting impact, with twelve children born from their union.
